Advocacy

Land Rights Initiative

The Land Rights Initiative Project is a strategic program designed to promote secure land tenure, fair land ownership, and equitable access to land resources within communities of the Bunyoro-Kitara region. The project is especially focused on empowering vulnerable groups including women, youth, persons with disabilities, and customary landholders, ensuring they are not left behind in land governance and development processes.

The initiative comes at a critical time when the region is experiencing increasing land pressure driven by oil and gas exploration, infrastructure expansion, urbanization, and investment interest. These developments have heightened the need for clear land ownership systems, informed communities, and fair dispute resolution mechanisms. The project therefore seeks to bridge the gap between communities and formal land governance systems, while protecting livelihoods, heritage, and long-term socio-economic stability.

Project Overview

The Land Rights Initiative Project is a transformative land governance and community empowerment program aimed at strengthening legal awareness, land security, and equitable access to land in the Bunyoro-Kitara region.

The project focuses on educating communities about land laws, tenure systems, registration processes, inheritance rights, and dispute resolution mechanisms, while also providing practical support for resolving land conflicts through mediation and legal referral pathways.

With the rapid expansion of the oil and gas sector in the region, the initiative places special emphasis on safeguarding community land rights in areas affected by exploration activities, infrastructure corridors, and investment-driven land acquisitions. It promotes transparency, informed consent, and fair benefit-sharing for local communities.

More than a legal awareness program, the initiative is a community transformation platform that strengthens justice, promotes social cohesion, and supports sustainable livelihoods through secure land ownership.

Land is the foundation of identity, livelihood, and heritage in Bunyoro-Kitara. However, increasing development pressures—especially from the oil and gas sector—have intensified land-related challenges, making secure land rights more urgent than ever.

The Land Rights Initiative Project ensures that development does not come at the cost of displacement, inequality, or conflict. Instead, it promotes a future where communities are informed, protected, and actively involved in land decisions that affect their lives.

By strengthening land rights, the project contributes to justice, peace, and sustainable development across the region.
