100 Years of Kabalega
When the World Celebrated Omukama Cwa II Kabalega
The 100 Years of Kabalega’s Legacy Commemoration (April 6, 2023 – April 5, 2024) was a landmark year-long celebration dedicated to honoring Omukama Cwa II Kabalega, one of Africa’s most formidable anti-colonial leaders and the 23rd king of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom. A century after his passing in 1923, the world gathered in spirit and presence to reflect on Kabalega’s enduring legacy of resistance, leadership, cultural pride, and the pursuit of African sovereignty.
Spearheaded by Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom in partnership with the Kabalega Foundation, government institutions, diaspora organizations, and cultural allies,
the commemoration sought to:
Celebrate and preserve Kabalega’s legacy as a national and Pan-African icon who valiantly resisted British colonialism.
- Reignite pride in African heritage and identity, particularly among the youth.
- Promote cultural diplomacy and development through unity, historical education, and intercultural exchange.
Lay foundations for long-term legacy initiatives, such as the Kabalega Cultural Square.
Through a carefully curated series of national and international events, the commemoration connected historical memory with contemporary relevance—linking Kabalega’s vision of a dignified, self-determined Africa with present-day aspirations for cultural preservation and socio-economic transformation.
