In the development discourse, we often hear of roads, hospitals, schools, and energy as the pillars of progress. These are critical, yes — but there is a quieter, often overlooked force that underpins every successful society: cultural infrastructure.
Cultural spaces — museums, heritage centers, public squares — serve not only as repositories of history but as platforms for shaping identity, nurturing pride, and enabling inclusive development. In a continent as diverse and historically rich as Africa, investing in cultural infrastructure is both a necessity and an opportunity.
Culture as a Catalyst for Development
Culture is not ornamental. It’s foundational. From the language we speak to the symbols we honor, culture provides the lens through which people understand themselves and their role in the world. Strong cultural identity builds social cohesion, fosters self-worth, and inspires generational continuity.
When people feel rooted in who they are, they build confidently, lead boldly, and relate across communities with dignity. This is why investing in culture is also investing in development — especially in a time when young Africans are seeking both purpose and belonging.
Efforts towards Kabalega Cultral Square Establishment
In the heart of Bunyoro, Uganda, Kabalega Foundation, in partnership with the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, is developing the Kabalega Cultural Square — a groundbreaking public space that will celebrate the legacy of one of Africa’s greatest leaders: Omukama Cwa II Kabalega.
The Square will serve as:
A cultural hub for festivals, storytelling, and music
A learning center for youth and researchers
A venue for intergenerational exchange and community dialogue
A tourist and heritage destination boosting local economies
This is more than a monument. It is aimed at establishing living space — dynamic, inclusive, and educational.

The Inspiration Behind the Square
Omukama Cwa II Kabalega was more than a monarch. He was a fearless defender of sovereignty, a champion of African dignity, and a visionary leader who resisted colonial domination at great personal cost. His leadership embodied resilience, unity, and a deep commitment to protecting his people’s identity and autonomy.
The Kabalega Cultural Square draws inspiration from these values — not merely to honor history, but to bring it forward into present-day relevance. By creating a physical space rooted in cultural memory, the Square offers a platform for education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and social renewal.
It will empower youth with stories of resistance and strength. It will create jobs through cultural tourism. And it will serve as a beacon of pride for Africans at home and abroad — a reminder that our heritage is not behind us, but before us to cherish and upon, as the foundation from which we rise.
A Concept Born from Legacy — Built by a Strong Passion to See African Heritage Preserved and Passed on.
The vision for Kabalega Cultural Square was not born overnight. It was conceived one idea at a time, shaped through dialogue, deep reflection, and cultural pride during the year-long centenary commemoration of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega’s Legacy (2023-2024). Every element of the Square — from its layout to its planned programs is designed to reflect the historical, cultural, social, and economic fabric of Bunyoro, and by extension, Uganda, and Africa.
With every block, and every donation by each believer in the enduring value of cultural heritage, it is a project that is meant for the community, to safeguard cultural heritage, by those who recognize the power of preserving African identity. Together, lets lay a foundation that will not only serve this generation but also inspire and educate those to come after us.
