Kabalega Independence Week 2026 – A call to unite around Heritage, Agribusiness, and Enterprise

HOIMA CITY, UGANDA — The historic Rukurato Grounds in Hoima City came alive 07th -10th October, 2026 as urban dwellers, farmers, entrepreneurs, government leaders, civic leaders, and corporate enterprise delegates gathered for Kabalega Independence Week (KIW) 2026.

Organized by Kabalega Foundation in strategic partnership with the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), the Uganda Coffee Federation (UCF), and NARO, the multi-day flagship event was held under the theme: “Heritage, Agribusiness Transformation & Regional Enterprise.”

Kabalega Independence Week series honor the enduring legacy of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega—a historical champion of territorial self-reliance, unity, and economic independence—translating his principles into modern enterprise growth, innovation, and regional trade across the region.

Translating Heritage into Modern Economic Enterprise

Speaking during the opening proceedings, Dr. James Isagara Kisoro, Executive Director of Kabalega Foundation, emphasized the Foundation’s central mission to institutionalize the legacy of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega:

“The driving intent of the Kabalega Foundation is to institutionalize the legacy of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega, and transform it into action for social, cultural, and economic development. Omukama Kabalega understood that a people who do not control their economic assets and productive capacity can never truly claim sovereignty. Today, we are transforming that historic self-reliance into modern enterprise growth, agritech adoption, and community empowerment across the region and beyond.”

Key Highlights of KIW 2026

The week brought together diverse economic and cultural sectors across four primary pillars:

  1. International Coffee Day Observance (October 8th):

Centering on the theme “Wealth for All: Exploring Opportunities in Coffee in the Bunyoro Oil-Rich Sub-Region,” national observances rallied smallholder farmers, youth, and investors toward commercial coffee production as a foundation for long-term household prosperity.

  2. Kabalega Business & Innovation Expo (October 8th – 10th):

A 3-day commercial trade fair bringing together corporate leaders, tech innovators, corporate institutions and organisations, and local MSMEs to display products, foster B2B networking, and equip local entrepreneurs with modern market insights.

  3. 4th Edition Kabalega Independence Run (October 10th):

The week’s major sports and wellness event mobilized hundreds of runners across 2km, 5km, 10km, and 21km race categories, with proceeds geared towards mobilization and distribution of high-quality coffee seedlings to smallholder farming households across the region, as well as training and capacity building in modern on-farm coffee growing, value-addition, standards, and trade.

  4. Cultural Music & Heritage Experience (October 10th Evening):

A grand cultural festival celebrating regional arts, performance, and unity, closing out the week with a vibrant showcase of Bunyoro-Kitara heritage.

H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Commends Kabalega Independence Week initiatives as pillars of Heritage Preservation, Unity, and Socio-Economic Transformation

A central highlight of Kabalega Independence Week 2026 was the inspiring address of the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni delivered by the Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs, Hon. Mary Mugasa Akiiki, during the main celebrations in Hoima City on October 10th, 2026. His remarks underscored the historical significance of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega, the imperative of broader integration, and the focus on household-level economic transformation.

  • Commemorating Ancestral Achievements and Unity:

The President commended the organizers for bringing citizens together to celebrate the life, leadership, and legacy of Omukama Cwa II Kabalega. He noted that this commemoration recognizes the historic achievements of ancestors in establishing centralized administration as a vital prerequisite for organizing production and societal welfare. He emphasized that just as ancestral kingdoms and chiefdoms united scores of clans to prevent internal conflict and foster cooperation, modern generations must use creative measures to unite the diverse peoples and religious groups of Uganda to gain access to greater human and natural resources.

  • Pan-Africanism and Overcoming Fragmented Markets:

Highlighting Pan-Africanism as a core NRM ideology, the President pointed out that economic and political integration across Africa is a matter of survival. He noted that limited market access—stemming from fragmented national markets like Uganda’s population of 45 million compared to economic giants like China, India, and the European Union—remains a major strategic bottleneck. As Uganda moves toward mass production, a collective continental market and political integration are essential to ensure long-term prosperity and security against external aggression.

  • Infrastructure Development and Household Wealth Creation:

The President highlighted that the NRM Government has successfully put in place key catalysts for development, including peace, stability, infrastructure (roads, schools, hospitals), and adequate power supply to lower the costs of doing business and attract global investment. With these foundations established, government efforts are now actively focused on addressing poverty at the household level. He urged the Bunyoro-Kingdom to guide citizens in selecting profitable enterprises across the four core sectors: commercial agriculture, industries, services, and ICT—while correctly utilizing government poverty eradication programs.
