Among his many achievements, one chapter of Kabalega\u2019s story holds particular meaning for us on this day.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"856\">A Historical Act of Refuge and Friendship<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"858\" data-end=\"1333\">In 1885, Omukama Kabalega welcomed monks of the <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"941\">Abbey-Principality of San Luigi<\/strong>, who had travelled from Fezzan (in present-day Libya) seeking refuge. Far from treating them as outsiders, Kabalega recognised their mission and offered them land within Bunyoro. He also bestowed upon their leader, <strong data-start=\"1183\" data-end=\"1209\">Prince-Abbot Joseph II<\/strong>, the title of <strong data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1235\">Mukungu<\/strong> (Prince-Governor)\u2014formally integrating them into the kingdom\u2019s governance and cultural framework. (More on this at: <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/san-luigi.org\/2020\/08\/06\/kabalega-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/san-luigi.org\/2020\/08\/06\/kabalega-foundation\/<\/a><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1544\">This generous act of hospitality was more than diplomatic; it was a statement of values. Kabalega\u2019s welcome sent a message that Bunyoro was a place where people in need could find safety, dignity, and purpose.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"1574\">Refuge as Responsibility<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1866\">Though the monks&#8217; time in Bunyoro was cut short by illness, the relationship they built with the kingdom lives on through history. This early example of cross-cultural solidarity and sanctuary echoes in today\u2019s efforts to protect the rights and dignity of refugees across Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"1898\">Carrying the Torch Forward<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"2148\">Today, the Kabalega Foundation honours this legacy by working to empower vulnerable communities\u2014including displaced populations\u2014through our <strong data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2076\">community development programmes<\/strong>. In partnership with local and international stakeholders, with focus on:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2292\">\n<li data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2184\">\n<p data-start=\"2152\" data-end=\"2184\">Civic engagement and inclusion<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2227\">\n<p data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2227\">Social Livelihood Improvement<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2256\">\n<p data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2256\">Environmental protection<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2292\">\n<p data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"2292\">Cultural heritage and education<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2294\" data-end=\"2403\">Our mission is rooted in the same values that guided Omukama Kabalega: <strong data-start=\"2357\" data-end=\"2402\">dignity, empowerment, and shared humanity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2617\">As we commemorate World Refugee Day, we are reminded that refuge is not just about shelter\u2014it is about opportunity, acceptance, and the right to belong.
